Planet Earth DVD Set Review
Planet Earth: The Complete Series is a BBC-produced documentary about the most amazing sights and sounds on earth. It’s an 11-part series that was narrated by Sir David Attenborough in the BBC broadcast and by Sigourney Weaver in The Discovery Channel broadcast.
First of all, not just teachers and documentary film buffs can appreciate Planet Earth. In fact, even if you just love movies but you’re not necessarily a nature lover you will be impressed by this series. It’s one of the best edited, well made documentary films out there about the planet. It features breath-taking scenes and it shows rare species of animals from the most remote locations.
As mentioned, this documentary is divided into 11 episodes: “Pole to Pole”, “Mountains”, “Deep Ocean”, “Deserts”, “Ice Worlds”, “Shallow Sea”, “Great Plains”, “Jungles”, “Fresh Water”, “Seasonal Forests”, and “Caves”. Each episode shows the characteristics of the landscapes and seascapes, as well as the animals and plants that thrive there. For instance, in the episode “Mountains”, you will see snow leopards and other animals in the Himalayan Mountains. You will also get a glimpse of the life of the animals living on the top of the highest mountains. In “Caves”, you will get a chance to see the most strange-looking creatures that evolved underground, and you will know more about bats. The whole series covers almost all the magnificent scenes on earth, from land to sea, from underground rivers and caves to frozen tundras.
There are many interesting things that you can learn from the Planet Earth DVD. It doesn’t just show different places; it also captures dramatic scenes of the everyday life of animals. For example, there’s this very intense scene in the “Great Plains” episode that shows an elephant surrounded by a pride of lions. In a way, it’s like a fictional movie that you would normally see in the theater—there’s the exposition, climax, and resolution of the story. You might feel sympathy and sadness for the prey, but at the same time you would be awed by the predator. These scenes make the Planet Earth a great documentary to watch and learn from.
Aside from that, the quality and resolution of the images are excellent. The details are very clear, except maybe for the aerial scenes. The narration and music are pretty good too. You will clearly hear the narration, but at the same time it will not overlap the orchestra score. Apart from the 11 episodes, the DVD set also contains bonus materials, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a bonus three-part documentary entitled “The Future” that shows the potential future of earth.
All in all, the Planet Earth DVD set will be a great addition to your DVD collection. It will make you discover many things and it will make you think. But it’s not just an educational documentary movie. It’s also entertaining, especially if you love outdoors or you love traveling to new and interesting places.
